Losartan is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and to help protect the kidneys from damage due to diabetes. It is also used to lower the risk of strokes in patients with high blood pressure and an enlarged heart. Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems.
Is losartan and Cozaar the same?Losartan potassium is the generic name for the drug sold under the brand name Cozaar, and it is sometimes called “generic Cozaar.” The U.S. Food and Drug Administration requires that makers of generic drugs prove they’re just as effective as the brand-name version.
Cozaar is a prescription medicine used to treat the symptoms of high blood pressure (hypertension), lower the risk of stroke in certain people with heart disease and diabetic nerve pain (neuropathy). Cozaar may be used alone or with other medications.
Cozaar belongs to a class of drugs called Angiotensin II Receptor Antagonist (ARBs).
It is not known if Cozaar is safe and effective in children younger than 6 years of age.
